“I will beg nothing from you, nor any man. Men have accused me, men have judged me… and now men will kill me. Men have sought to silence me all my days. But, before I am cut off, hear me. You’re the thief, sir, for that you’ve stolen this world. You’re the murderer, for that you’ve killed its dreams. And you, sir, are the whore, for you sold your soul for a bag of gold.” - Angelica Fanshawe

“Must all end in blood?”
“Aye, all must end in blood.”

If you haven’t seen The Devil’s Whore, you absolutely must. It’s four episodes long and tells the story of the English Civil War through the eyes of the fictional Angelica Fanshawe. You see the fall of King Charles I and the rise of Oliver Cromwell. You meet Edward Sexby, the man who tried and failed to assassinate Cromwell, who in the end forgot all his promises to the people and crowned himself the new king. Angelica is a noblewoman -a girl really, in the beginning- who goes on such an extraordinary journey. She falls in love three times, and you’ll be hard pressed to decide which of the men she truly belonged with. The wonderful thing about this mini series though is that it’s not about a woman affected by the actions of men. It’s about men affected by this one woman, and how she changes them and brings out the best in each of them. It helps too that it has a dream cast -Michael Fassbender, John Simm, Peter Capaldi, Maxine Peake and Harry Lloyd to name but a few- and Andrea Riseborough is simply stunning in the lead role. In short, it’s one of my favourite television dramas and I don’t know how many times I’ve seen it now but it never stops being fascinating.
